Buttons tweak for Thunderbird 3.1.x

Like a few other Thunderbird users, I've found the Buttons! add-on to be extremely useful. Unfortunately, it hasn't been updated in a while, and it won't work with the latest update to Thunderbird. (It worked in 3.0.x, but not in 3.1.x)

I decided to try the easy way out to see if I could get it to work. I unzipped the Buttons 0.5.3.2 XPI file, modified the maximum compatible version in the install.rdf file, and rezipped it. Seems to be working fine for me. It's nice to have my Previous! and Next! buttons back again!

For those interested in using the version I tweaked, here's a link to the buttons 0.4.3.2b XPI. (yes, I added a "b" to the version number)

  1. I tried to install your revised link, but my computer says it is not compatible with Firefox version 3.6.9. What browser do you recommend using?

  2. It's an add-on for Thunderbird, not Firefox. You need to save the XPI to your hard drive (right-click and choose "Save link as...") and then install it from Thunderbird (Tools -- Add-ons -- Install... button).

  3. Thanks for the attempt but I loved Buttons for the "Delete Junk!" feature. It does not seem to work in TB 3.1.3. Sigh. Does it work for you?

  4. Nice job. I was missing Buttons Add-on when my Thunderbird was updated to 3.1.4. Thank you, it works great.

  5. I can save it, but, Thunderbird doesn't know where it is to install. Opening add-ons doesn't list the "b" version. Ideas?

  6. Once you save the add-on, you need to go into Thunderbird, click on Tools -- Add-ons, and then click the "Install..." button and browse to the location where you saved the add-on XPI file.

  7. David, thanks... Problem is that the window that opens for addons does not allow you to browse... I know where I saved the file, but IT"s not finding that location, and I don't get a "browse" button... Very confusing... (and, I MISS MY buttons). r.

  8. Installed the modified file as I was looking for the "Delete message being read without automatically opening next message". Had this button on previous version of TB but not now.

"Delete" button now says "Mark selected message as read & delete"... all it does is change the "read" status back and forth but does not delete it!!!

  10. So pleased to see this fix, but having problems..
I can get this to install ok, but at least some buttons don't seem to working (e.g. Next!). And I'm not able to set files for Archive! in its option tab.

    I'm running T'bird 3.1.4 on Win7-homePremium
    thanks

I meant to add that I'd restarted T'bird and then my machine, with no change

  12. Yeah, I've noticed that some of the buttons don't work anymore. As I understand it, the code in Buttons! hasn't been updated in quite a while through several iterations of Thunderbird.

  13. I finally got this to work, even with today's update 3.1.6. I downloaded the .xpi file above. (the "b" version.) Under tools, click button for "install" and (finally for me, I couldn't find this before) a search window opened to browse to the downloaded .xpi file, and then ok, install, restart, and finally, I can go to the "real" NEXT message.

This shouldn't be so hard, and amazing they've left that out.

  14. Of course, maybe I spoke too soon. (or have the wrong buttons, but, I hit next, and a 2003 email appeared.) ~sigh~

  15. Thank you thank you thank you!!! I have been missing for many months the Archive! button to streamline my email processing. Thanks!

  17. The modified version did not work for me.
However, I found elsewhere, that once an email is open using the f key for forward and b key for backward does what I want for "next" and "previous"

  18. That's amazing. I cannot find buttons that work, but the "f" to go forward, and "b" to go back does work.

I don't do code, but I would think that could make for an easy button, but have no idea how...

but, that works, even if this doesn't. Thanks.

  19. Are there any plans to make this compatible with 5.0?
